BABY AND TODDLER - 6 MONTHS

Social/Emotional

  • Knows familiar faces and knows if someone is a stranger
  • Likes to play with others
  • Likes to look at self in a mirror
     

Language/Communication

  • Responds to sounds by making sounds
  • Strings vowels together when babbling (“ah”, “eh”, “oh”) and begins to imitate parents in turn taking games
  • Responds to own name
  • Begins to say consonant sounds (jabbering with “m”, “b”)
     

Cognitive (learning, thinking, problem solving)

  • Shows curiosity about things and tries to get out of reach objects
     

Movement/Physical Development

  • Fine motor
    • Transfers objects from one hand to the other
  • Gross motor
    • Rolls in both directions – front to back, back to front
    • Begins to sit unsupported
    • When standing, supports weight on legs and may start to bounce
    • Can support self on hands and knees, and begins to rock back and forth
    • May begin to crawl, backwards before moving forwards
       

 


Ask for help if your child:

  • Does not try to reach for toys
  • Does not respond to sounds
  • Has difficulty bringing toys to mouth
  • Does not make vowels sounds
  • Does not roll over in either direction
  • Muscles feel very stiff or very floppy
