Social/Emotional

  • Gets excited when with other children
  • Shows more independence
  • Can be defiant – does things when told not to
  • Plays primarily beside other children but starting to include other children in games such as chase games
     

Language/Communication

  • Can point to things or pictures when they are named
  • Knows the names of familiar people and body parts
  • Strings 2 to 4 words together
  • Completes sentences and rhymes in familiar books
  • Follows two step instructions “Pick up your shoes and put them in the closet”
  • Points to things in a book
     

Cognitive (learning, thinking, problem solving)

  • Begins to sort shapes and colours
  • Plays simple make-believe games
     

Movement/Physical Development

  • Fine motor
    • Builds a tower of 4 or more blocks
    • Uses one hand more than the other
    • Snips with scissors
    • Makes or copies straight lines and circles
    • Holds crayon with thumb and fingers
  • Gross motor
    • Stands on tiptoe
    • Kicks a ball
    • Runs forward well
       

Ask for help if your child:

  • Does not use 2-word phrases
  • Does not walk steadily
  • Does not copy actions or words
  • Does not follow simple instructions
